How long is the consultation?

Consultations may vary in length depending on the type of procedure. On average consults take between 30 minutes to an hour.

How long do I have to wait between date of consult and date of Surgery?

Our helpful staff will schedule your Surgery in accordance with the surgeon's availability. Surgery can occur within 1-2 weeks provided pre-operative paperwork is completed.

How do I obtain further information about the medical procedure I am considering?

Discuss this with your Surgeon or General Practitioner. Your surgeon will be able to provide literature orrecommend a website.

Do I have any choice in which Surgeon performs my procedure?

Yes you do. Provided your requested Surgeon has been granted privileges at the centre and is registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia he or she will be able to perform the required procedure.

How long have the Surgeons been in practice?

This varies from Surgeon to Surgeon. To learn more about our team of Surgeons and Practitioners please visit our section on surgeons.

What type of Anaesthesia is used?

The type of Anaesthesia administered will depend on the type of surgery that you are undergoing and your particular characteristics. It will vary from a General Anesthetic to Regional or Local Anesthetic.

In a Regional Anesthetic, only the part of your body that the surgeon is operating on is frozen by the Anesthesiologist. In a Local Anesthetic the surgeon inject the Local Anesthetic into the very localized area on which they are operating. The anesthetic can give you medications through an intravenour line that will make you drowsy and often not remember being in the Operating Room.

Often Local Anesthetic will be injected during the procedure that will keep you comfortable for many hours after Surgery. In consultation with your Anesthesiologist you can decide on the type of Anesthetic that will be safest for you.

Regardless of the type of Anesthetic given, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and EKG are routinely monitored.

What kind of tests do I need to have done prior to my surgery?

This depends on the type of procedure and any pre-existing medical conditions. The Anesthesiologist and Surgeon will advise you.

What dietary and smoking restrictions will I need to follow before surgery?

This may vary depending on the nature of the Procedure. You can either wait to be given instructions to follow once your Surgery or Procedure has been scheduled or view them here.

What dietary and smoking restrictions will I need to follow after Surgery?

As with your pre-operative restrictions, you will be given a list of post-operative instructions prior to Surgery or view them here.

For day Surgery, can I go home on my own?

No. An escort is required. If you do not have one, the Centre will assist in providing one for you.
